Introduce an Australian-style points-based immigration system

Last updated 3 years ago

That is why a majority Conservative Government will [...] introduce a firmer and fairer Australian-style points-based immigration system, so that we can decide who comes to this country on the basis of the skills they have and the contribution they can make – not where they come from.

Conservative Party Manifesto 2019, p.20

Our verdict

  • This is a promise to establish a points-based immigration system, under which migrants can apply to enter the UK only if they attain a certain number of points, assigned on the basis of factors such as work skills, a job offer, education and language proficiency.
  • In February 2020, the government released a policy statement which explained the new system, and committed to its introduction on 1 January 2021. That was followed in August by another policy statement outlining further details.
  • The points-based immigration system has been in place since 1 January 2021, so this policy is ‘done’.
