Our verdict
- This is a pledge to “continue” building free schools, extending a policy that has been in place since 2010.
- Since the 2019 election, 17 new schools have opened and 47 proposed schools have moved from the application stage to the pre-opening phase.
- The ‘free school presumption‘ legislation means the vast majority of these new schools will be free schools, so this policy is ‘done’.
