Back the increased use of stop and search

Last updated 4 years ago

The Conservatives will always back the brave men and women of our police and security services, which is why we will empower the police, backing the increased use of stop and search as long as it is fair and proportionate.

Conservative Party Manifesto 2019, p.17

Our verdict

  • This is a pledge to support proposals to extend the stop and search powers currently granted to police under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984.
  • A consultation ran from 14 September to 8 November 2020 looking at the design of Serious Violence Reduction Orders (SVROs), a proposed new court order to empower police to stop and search people previously convicted of offences involving knives or other offensive weapons, removing the “reasonable grounds” requirement when an SVRO has been imposed. Feedback is currently being analysed.
  • The consultation represents a proposal from government to change the law to increase the use of stop and search, so this policy is ‘done’.

There's always room for debate
