Create a new £640 million Nature for Climate fund

Last updated 3 years ago

We will invest in nature, helping us to reach our Net Zero target with a £640 million new Nature for Climate fund.

Conservative Party Manifesto 2019, p.43

Our verdict

  • This policy is a pledge to establish a Nature for Climate fund to support natural habitats like woodland and peatland.
  • In the March 2020 Budget, the Chancellor announced “£640 million for a new Nature for Climate Fund”. Some funding was disbursed in June 2020, and the November 2020 Spending Review announced a further £90 million for the fund. The fund is used to invest in schemes across the country on an ongoing basis. In May 2021, the England Trees Action Plan announced that to attain the government’s tree planting target it intends to “spend over £500 million of the £640 million Nature for Climate Fund on trees and woodlands in England between 2020 and 2025”.
  • This is a promise to simply “create” the fund, not to allocate the entire £640 million, so this policy is ’done’.
