Our verdict
- To meet the evolving challenges to national security, the government pledged to create a Space Command (a Space Command would, for example, make better use of satellite technology as part of our military defence programme).
- In February 2020, the government appointed the first ‘Director Space’ in the Ministry of Defence (MoD). He will be in charge of a 25 person team in the MoD’s headquarters in London. Day-to-day operations though are currently undertaken by a squadron of the Royal Air Force.
- The government is set to publish its Strategic Defence and Security Review and hold its first meetings of the National Space Council later this year. So although there is currently still no formal Space Command, the appointment of the ‘Director Space’ role is enough to mark this policy as ‘in progress’.
