Ban imports from trophy hunting of endangered animals

...and ban imports from trophy hunting of endangered animals.

Conservative Party Manifesto 2019, p.54

Our verdict

  • This is a promise to ban imports resulting from hunting endangered animals with the objective of retaining part of the animal to represent the success of the hunt – ‘trophy hunting’.
  • A consultation on controlling the import and export of hunting trophies was launched under the previous government and concluded on 25 February 2020, a fortnight after the Prime Minister had reiterated this policy pledge in the House of Commons.
  • Publication of responses to the consultation has been delayed by the coronavirus outbreak, but the pending analysis of those responses, and the Prime Minister’s clear statement of intent, mean that this policy is ‘in progress’.
