Bring forward cat microchipping

Last updated 3 years ago

We will bring forward cat microchipping, giving cat owners peace of mind and increasing the measures we have available to tackle cat theft.

Conservative Party Manifesto 2019, p.54

Our verdict

  • This is a promise to make cat microchipping mandatory beyond the provisions of the Pet Travel Scheme.
  • A call for evidence on cat microchipping, started by the previous administration, concluded on 4 January 2020, and there has been no response from government.
  • A campaign urging owners to microchip cats did suggest an inclination to fulfil this pledge, but until there is clear action from this administration towards mandatory microchipping, this policy is ‘not started’.

There's always room for debate

We’re serious about providing clear, up-to-date, non-partisan information. We focus on being consistent and fair in how we reach our verdicts, and always explain our reasoning. But there is always room for debate. So if you see it differently, we’d love you to tell us why. Or even better, submit an edit.
