Establish a new £500 million Blue Planet Fund to protect the oceans
Last updated 4 months ago
Conservative Party Manifesto 2019, p.55We will establish a new £500 million Blue Planet Fund to help protect our oceans from plastic pollution, warming sea temperatures and overfishing...
Our verdict
- This policy promises to set up a fund for overseas projects aimed at countering the negative effects of human activity on marine ecosystems.
- A June 2020 press release restated the commitment to establishing the Blue Planet Fund; in October 2020 the government said it was “on track…to be launched next year”; and in January 2021 the Prime Minister announced a £3 billion, five-year climate change spending commitment which will be used in part to support “the flagship Blue Planet Fund” .
- The stated plan is to establish this fund at some point in 2021, so for now this policy is ‘in progress’.
