Establish a new £500 million Blue Planet Fund to protect the oceans
Last updated 2 weeks ago
Conservative Party Manifesto 2019, p.55
We will establish a new £500 million Blue Planet Fund to help protect our oceans from plastic pollution, warming sea temperatures and overfishing...
- This policy promises to set up a fund for overseas projects aimed at countering the negative effects of human activity on marine ecosystems.
- A June 2020 press release restated the commitment to establishing the Blue Planet Fund; in October 2020 the government said it was “on track…to be launched next year”; and in January 2021 the Prime Minister announced a £3 billion, five-year climate change spending commitment which will be used in part to support “the flagship Blue Planet Fund” .
- This fund was notably absent from both the March 2021 Budget and the May 2021 Queen’s Speech. Although it was mentioned in the Prime Minister’s climate change spending commitment and the stated plan remains to establish it at some point in 2021, until we find evidence of action taken towards establishing the Blue Planet Fund, not simply words, this policy is ‘not started’.
