Introduce tougher sentences for animal cruelty
Last updated 4 years ago
Conservative Party Manifesto 2019, p.54We will introduce tougher sentences for animal cruelty.
Our verdict
- This is a pledge to strengthen the sentencing for animal cruelty crimes.
- The government has given its backing to the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill, which aims to increase the maximum prison sentence from 6 months to 5 years and/or unlimited fines.
- The coronavirus pandemic has slowed the passage of the bill, but it is currently proceeding through the House of Commons, so this policy is ‘in progress’.
