Our verdict
- This is a pledge to keep the UK out of the European Union Customs Union, which removes tariffs between members and imposes a common external tariff on goods entering the union.
- The Withdrawal Agreement negotiated with the EU required the UK to leave the customs union after the transition period, and the government legislated to implement that agreement.
- As of 11pm on 31 December 2020, the UK is no longer in the EU Customs Union. This policy is ‘done’.
