Our verdict

  • This is a pledge to keep the UK out of the European single market, which guarantees free movement of goods, services, capital and labour between EU member states, as well as five non-EU countries, currently including the UK.
  • The Withdrawal Agreement negotiated with the EU required the UK to leave the single market after the transition period, and the government legislated to implement that agreement.
  • As of 11pm on 31 December 2020, the UK is out of the EU single market. This policy is ‘done’.
