Raise teachers’ starting salaries to £30,000
Last updated 4 years ago
Conservative Party Manifesto 2019, p.13We want to attract the best talent into teaching and recognise the great work they do, so we’re raising teachers’ starting salaries to £30,000
Our verdict
- When this government took office, starting salaries for teachers outside London were approximately £24,000, and this policy promises to raise that to £30,000.
- On 21 July 2020, the Education Secretary announced “that the minimum starting salary for a qualified teacher in 2020/21 will rise to £25,714 outside of London”, and he restated the plan to introduce “a £30,000 starting salary by 2022”.
- The government has delivered the highest pay increase for teachers in 15 years and remains committed to the £30,000 target, but until it is attained, this policy remains ‘in progress’.
