Get rid of the arbitrary 15-year limit on voting rights for British expats

...and get rid of the arbitrary 15-year limit on their voting rights.

Conservative Party Manifesto 2019, p.48

Our verdict

  • This is a promise to give British citizens living overseas voting rights for life.
  • The briefing notes for the Queen’s Speech in December 2019 promised to action this policy “in due course”, and on 18 February 2020, the Prime Minister restated the pledge in a letter to a campaigner.
  • To date, however, no announcements have been made on plans to deliver votes for life, so this policy is ‘not started’.
