Increase the health surcharge to ensure it covers the full cost of use

Last updated 4 years ago

We [...] will increase the health surcharge to ensure it covers the full cost of use.

Conservative Party Manifesto 2019, p.23

Our verdict

  • This is a promise to increase the Immigration Health Surcharge, currently payable when a non-EEA (European Economic Area) national makes a visa application to work, study or join family in the UK.
  • The government announced in the March 2020 Budget that an increase to the Immigration Health Surcharge (from £400 up to £624 per year, with a discounted rate for children) would be implemented from October 2020.
  • On the basis that the government has set a timeline for implementation of this promise, this policy is ‘in progress’.
