Prioritise the environment in our first Budget through investment in green initiatives
Last updated 2 years ago
Conservative Party Manifesto 2019, p.55Our first Budget will prioritise the environment: investing in R&D; decarbonisation schemes; new flood defences, which will receive £4 billion in new funding over the coming years; electric vehicle infrastructure including a national plug-in network and gigafactory; and clean energy.
Our verdict
- This is a promise to include funding for certain green initiatives in the government’s first Budget.
- The March 2020 Budget included funding plans to:
-
- increase R&D investment
- double the size of the Energy Innovation Programme
- provide £5.2 billion over six years for flood defences
- establish a Rapid Charging Fund for electric vehicle charging infrastructure
- COVID-19 has slowed delivery on many of these programmes, but because the government did include the investment plans in its first Budget, as promised, this policy is ‘done’.
