Support the Northern Ireland Executive to reduce public sector dependence
Last updated 3 years ago
Conservative Party Manifesto 2019, p.44After Brexit, we will support the Northern Ireland Executive to [...] reduce public sector dependence
Our verdict
- This is a commitment to help the Northern Ireland Executive introduce greater private sector involvement in the provision of programmes, goods and services to the public.
- Recent data from the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency shows that private sector output has decreased over the past year while public sector work has increased very slightly. Uncertainty surrounding Brexit and the impact of COVID-19 may be significant factors in those trends.
- It is too soon after the Brexit deadline of 31 December 2020 to make a clear judgement on the status of this pledge, but with an apparent shift towards greater dependence on the public sector, for now, this policy is ‘not started’.
